Monotone Inc. ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our AI-powered storytelling service ("the Service").
We prioritize your privacy. This policy describes our data practices, including what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights regarding your personal information.
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the Service.
2. Information We Collect
We collect several types of information to provide and improve our Service:
2.1 Personal Information
- Account Information: Email address, username, password (encrypted), and account preferences
- Payment Information: Billing information processed through our payment processor (Stripe). We do not store your full credit card details on our servers.
- Profile Information: Any information you choose to add to your profile, such as display name or profile picture
2.2 Usage Information
- Prompts and Generated Content: The text prompts you input and the AI-generated content produced by the Service
- Chat History: Your conversation history with AI characters
- Usage Analytics: Features you use, time spent on the Service, interaction patterns, and preferences
- Device and Browser Information: IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, and unique device identifiers
- Log Data: Access times, pages viewed, clicks, and other actions taken within the Service
2.3 Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use cookies, web beacons, and similar tracking technologies to track activity on our Service and store certain information. You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, if you do not accept cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of our Service.

4. Third-Party Data Processors
To provide the Service, we transmit your prompts and usage data to third-party AI model providers and infrastructure services. These providers process your data on our behalf to generate AI responses and content.
Our third-party providers include:
- AI Model Providers: Services like Fal.ai, OpenRouter, and other AI inference platforms that generate text and images based on your prompts. Your prompts are anonymized where possible and sent to these providers to generate responses.
- Payment Processor: Stripe processes all payment transactions. Stripe's use of your payment information is governed by their Privacy Policy.
- Cloud Infrastructure: We use cloud hosting providers (such as AWS, Vercel, or similar) to store and process data.
- Analytics Services: We may use analytics tools like PostHog or Google Analytics to understand how users interact with our Service.
Important: These third-party providers are contractually obligated not to use your data to train their models or for any purpose other than providing services to us. However, we cannot guarantee their practices. We carefully select providers with strong privacy and security commitments.
We do NOT sell your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes.
5. Data Storage and Security
We take the security of your data seriously and implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information.
5.1 Encryption
- Data in Transit: All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using TLS/SSL encryption
- Data at Rest: Your chat history and personal information are encrypted when stored in our databases
- Password Security: Your password is hashed and salted using industry-standard algorithms. We never store plaintext passwords.
5.2 Access Controls
We limit access to your personal information to employees and contractors who need it to perform their job functions. All personnel with access to sensitive data are bound by confidentiality obligations.
5.3 Security Limitations
While we implement reasonable security measures, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your information.
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal information only as long as necessary to provide the Service and fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy.
- Active Accounts: We retain your account information, chat history, and generated content for as long as your account remains active
- Account Deletion: If you delete your account, we will permanently delete all your personal information, including your prompts, chat history, and account details, within 30 days. Deleted data cannot be recovered.
- Legal Obligations: We may retain certain information for longer periods if required by law, to resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, or for legitimate business purposes (such as fraud prevention)
- Anonymized Data: We may retain anonymized, aggregated usage statistics that cannot be linked back to you
7. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right to Access: You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Right to Rectification: You can request that we correct any inaccurate or incomplete information
- Right to Erasure: You can request that we delete your personal information (subject to certain legal exceptions)
- Right to Restriction: You can request that we limit how we use your personal information
- Right to Data Portability: You can request a copy of your data in a structured, machine-readable format
- Right to Object: You can object to certain types of processing, such as direct marketing
- Right to Withdraw Consent: Where we rely on consent to process your data, you can withdraw that consent at any time

You can also access and manage much of your information directly through your account settings, including downloading your data or deleting your account.
8. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. These countries may have data protection laws that are different from the laws of your country.
Our servers are primarily located in the United States. If you are accessing the Service from outside the United States, please be aware that your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States.
By using the Service, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States and other countries where we or our service providers operate.
9. Children's Privacy
The Service is not intended for individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@monotone.fyi, and we will delete that information from our systems.
10. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

- Right to request deletion of your personal information
- Right to opt-out of the sale of your personal information (Note: We do NOT sell personal information)
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising your CCPA rights

11. European Privacy Rights (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including those described in Section 7 above.
Our legal basis for processing your personal data includes:
- Contractual Necessity: Processing necessary to perform our contract with you (providing the Service)
- Legitimate Interests: Processing necessary for our legitimate business interests (improving the Service, preventing fraud)
- Consent: Where you have given explicit consent for specific processing activities

12. Do Not Track Signals
Some web browsers have a "Do Not Track" feature that signals to websites that you do not want your online activities tracked. Our Service does not currently respond to Do Not Track signals.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors.
If we make material changes, we will notify you by email (to the email address associated with your account) or by posting a prominent notice on our Service at least 30 days before the changes take effect.
