Monotone Inc. ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our sleep wellness mobile application ("the App" or "the Service").
We prioritize your privacy and the security of your personal information. This policy describes our data practices, including what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights regarding your personal information.
By downloading and using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not download or use the Service.
2. Information We Collect
We collect several types of information to provide and improve our Service:
2.1 Personal Information
- Account Information: Email address, username, password (encrypted), and account preferences
- Payment Information: Billing information processed through our payment processor (Stripe). We do not store your full credit card details on our servers.
- Profile Information: Any information you choose to add to your profile, such as display name or profile picture
2.2 Usage Information
- Sleep and App Usage Data: When you use the App, sleep session durations, audio tracks played, features used, and app interaction patterns
- AI Companion Conversations: Your conversation history and messages with AI sleep companions, which we use to provide personalized responses and improve the service
- Preferences and Settings: Your sleep sound preferences, companion personality selections, app settings, and customization choices
- Device Information: iOS version, device model, device identifier (IDFA/IDFV), mobile carrier, and device settings
- Log and Diagnostic Data: App crashes, performance metrics, error logs, and technical diagnostics to improve app stability
2.3 Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use cookies, web beacons, and similar tracking technologies to track activity on our Service and store certain information. You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, if you do not accept cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of our Service.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- Provide the Service: To deliver sleep sounds, AI companion interactions, and personalized sleep assistance features
- Personalization: To remember your preferences, customize AI companion personalities and responses, and provide a tailored sleep experience
- Account Management: To create and manage your account, process subscriptions through Apple, and provide customer support
- Improve the Service: To analyze usage patterns, improve AI companion responses, fix bugs, develop new features, and enhance the overall user experience
- Safety and Security: To detect and prevent fraud, abuse, security issues, and violations of our Terms of Service
- Communications: To send you service updates, feature announcements, sleep tips, and (with your consent) promotional communications. You can opt out of marketing emails at any time.
- Legal Compliance: To comply with legal obligations, enforce our Terms, and protect our rights and the rights of our users
4. Third-Party Data Processors
To provide the Service, we use third-party service providers to help deliver AI companion features, process payments, and maintain our infrastructure. These providers process your data on our behalf under strict confidentiality agreements.
Our third-party providers include:
- AI Service Providers: We use AI platforms such as Anthropic Claude and OpenAI to power our sleep companion conversations. Your messages to AI companions are transmitted to these providers to generate responses. We minimize personally identifiable information sent to these services whenever possible.
- Apple App Store: All subscription payments are processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple's handling of your payment information is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Cloud Infrastructure: We use cloud hosting providers (such as Supabase, AWS, Vercel, or similar) to securely store and process app data.
- Analytics Services: We may use analytics tools like PostHog, Mixpanel, or similar services to understand app usage patterns and improve user experience. These tools may collect anonymized usage data.
Important: These third-party providers are contractually obligated not to use your data to train their models or for any purpose other than providing services to us. However, we cannot guarantee their practices. We carefully select providers with strong privacy and security commitments.
We do NOT sell your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes.
We may retain anonymized conversation excerpts (with all personally identifiable information removed) to improve AI companion quality, ensure appropriate responses, and enhance the sleep companion experience. 5. Data Storage and Security
We take the security of your data seriously and implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information.
5.1 Encryption
- Data in Transit: All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using TLS/SSL encryption
- Data at Rest: Your chat history and personal information are encrypted when stored in our databases
- Password Security: Your password is hashed and salted using industry-standard algorithms. We never store plaintext passwords.
5.2 Access Controls
We limit access to your personal information to employees and contractors who need it to perform their job functions. All personnel with access to sensitive data are bound by confidentiality obligations.
5.3 Security Limitations
While we implement reasonable security measures, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your information.
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal information only as long as necessary to provide the Service and fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy.
- Active Accounts: We retain your account information, conversation history with AI companions, sleep preferences, and usage data for as long as your account remains active
- Account Deletion: If you delete your account through the App settings, we will permanently delete all your personal information, including your conversation history, preferences, and account details, within 30 days. Deleted data cannot be recovered.
- Legal Obligations: We may retain certain information for longer periods if required by law, to resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, or for legitimate business purposes (such as fraud prevention)
- Anonymized Data: We may retain anonymized, aggregated usage statistics that cannot be linked back to you
7. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right to Access: You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Right to Rectification: You can request that we correct any inaccurate or incomplete information
- Right to Erasure: You can request that we delete your personal information (subject to certain legal exceptions)
- Right to Restriction: You can request that we limit how we use your personal information
- Right to Data Portability: You can request a copy of your data in a structured, machine-readable format
- Right to Object: You can object to certain types of processing, such as direct marketing
- Right to Withdraw Consent: Where we rely on consent to process your data, you can withdraw that consent at any time

You can also access and manage much of your information directly through your account settings, including downloading your data or deleting your account.
8. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. These countries may have data protection laws that are different from the laws of your country.
Our servers are primarily located in the United States. If you are accessing the Service from outside the United States, please be aware that your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States.
By using the Service, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States and other countries where we or our service providers operate.
9. Children's Privacy
The Service is intended for users aged 13 and older. Users between 13 and 18 must have parental or guardian permission to use the App. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hi@monotone.fyi, and we will promptly delete that information from our systems.
For users under 18, we recommend parental supervision and involvement in setting up and using sleep features.
10. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):
- Right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, and sell
- Right to request deletion of your personal information
- Right to opt-out of the sale of your personal information (Note: We do NOT sell personal information)
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising your CCPA rights

11. European Privacy Rights (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including those described in Section 7 above.
Our legal basis for processing your personal data includes:
- Contractual Necessity: Processing necessary to perform our contract with you (providing the Service)
- Legitimate Interests: Processing necessary for our legitimate business interests (improving the Service, preventing fraud)
- Consent: Where you have given explicit consent for specific processing activities
- Legal Obligations: Processing necessary to comply with legal requirements
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority if you believe we have violated your privacy rights.
12. Do Not Track Signals
Some web browsers have a "Do Not Track" feature that signals to websites that you do not want your online activities tracked. Our Service does not currently respond to Do Not Track signals.
13. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors.
If we make material changes, we will notify you by email (to the email address associated with your account) or by posting a prominent notice on our Service at least 30 days before the changes take effect.
We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
